Hello Joel,
Thank you very very much for this highly useful quick reference guide.
I was wondering if you could give me a quick clarification. I had suspected (and your reference guide confirms it), that if I were to import a HTC Smartphone from a website based out of UK, then the HS code applicable would be 85171290?
The cost of the phone is about 420 pounds. Add to it about 22 pounds of shipping charges, that works out to 442 pounds. At the current rate 80.03 Rupees per pound, 442 pounds works out to 35816.36.
And as per the calculations for import & customs duty of 85171290, the import & customs duties works out to a little under 400 Rupees.
Am I correct in my above assumptions? Can you please clarify? And if I am correct, how come when I spoke to DHL Customer service (and a few other websites that I checked), they somehow land up with very higher figures of about 5000 to 6000 Rupees?
Your help in this matter is greatly appreciated.
Thanks & Regards,
Srini
hi srini
first of all let me tell you that the HS code is only an indication to the basic duty,,which for most electronic products is 0%,,but what it does not give you is the other duties like CVD,octroi, cess etc,,which can bring the total to about 22%-25% of the product.,,so if youre phone costs 420 pounds,,take another 100 pounds for duty/custom charges and another 22 pounds for shipping,,,approx 550 pounds total,,so the figure of 5000-6000 quoted is fine that your courier dhl or fedex will pay on your behalf…
Very informative post/reviews..thanks for sharing !! Lovely blog..
