B.Sc. Geology

B.Sc. Geology – Bachelor or Geology or geological science is a 3 year undergraduate program that is offered to senior college students after completing class 12 in science stream. It is the study, processing, analysis and development of rocks, soil and sediment.

Geologists are used by corporations to discover for oil, coal and other natural resources and by mining companies to check the soil for traces of natural resources before it can be excavated and dug up.

Nowadays there are many tools that can help you detect these trace elements of precious metals and fossil fuels, but geologists are still employed to work these machines as they have extensive training in the operation of this complex machinery as well as to scan and analyze computer generated images and maps.

Things to know about B.Sc Geology course

Here are some things that you need to know before you can make up your mind and take up B.Sc Geology after 12th.

Nomenclature – Since you will be dealing with lots of minerals and chemicals, which will be your main line of work, you will have to keep up with all the names of 100s of minerals and chemicals. Some of these will sound similar and will be confusing to remember them all.

Field Work – Geology deals with taking samples and analysing soil and rocks,No guesses, but you wont find these in your house! you will have to trek long distances sometimes – in harsh climates and over rugged, unforgiving terrain before you can reach the site.At the site, you will excavate and dig, till you reach the bed, where the sample can be extracted. It is a total outdoor work, and if you are not cut out for this sort of thing, then think twice before getting into it.

Strong Chemistry – Just like names and properties of minerals, you will also have your hands full with lots of organic and inorganic chemicals. They will inert, gaseous and obnoxious :). You get the idea,if you were weak in chemistry ad have trouble balancing equations or remembering the chemical formula for organic compounds then be prepared for a hard time.

Industry – One of the major industries that will support your job and give you employment is the petrochemical and mining industry. In recent times, many mine have closed down due to government allocation scams as well as mining scams. In fact,in the state of Goa,all mining activity was put on hold for few years due to these scams. Research the job prospects well and do your due diligence before getting into this industry.

About the course

It is a three year undergraduate course which is divided into 6 semesters nd two semester per year.In addition to theory papers there are extensive field trips and you will be graded on field work in each semester. These are similar to practicals, and the weightage that the field trips have is quite alot so you have to make sure to do well in them else your overall grades will be low.

Eligibility for B.Sc Geology

In order to be eligible for this course, you need to have done class 12 in science from a recognized board / university. Generally most degree colleges have this bsc course in senior college and you need to check the college prospectus, if not you can take admission into another college by way of transfer.IF you have anything above 50-55% in your class 12 boards,it should be sufficient for you to get a merit seat.

Admission and FEES

As stated earlier admission into a B.Sc Geology course can be taken in your same college from where you completed your class 12,if they have the course. You will have more preference since you are an existing student, and there will be separate merit list that comes out earlier.

The FEES are in the range of Rs.50,000 – 1.5 lacs for the entire duration of the 3 years course. However there are some government colleges that are even as low as Rs.15000 for the entire course of 3 years.
