D5 full form

What does D5 mean or stand for ?

D5  is the common medical term for 5% dextrose solution which is an IV – Intravenous fluid.It is a sugar solution and sometimes can also be taken orally,but in most cases is given through the drip.It is used when the patient is weakened by an infection or illness and is not ingesting solid food.

Its more common use is that of people who are hypoglycemic or have a low blood sugar.Low sugar can also cause shock and can cause the body to shut down.By giving D5,the sugar level can be maintained at normal levels to normalize the patient.
