What is the meaning of NIC and full form ?

This add on card was used directly on a computer motherboard in a PCI slot and had a port where an RJ 45 connector of a cable could be plugged in.In the older motherboards this was the only way to get broadband internet,however in the newer systems the NIC was phased out and an onboard network card was attached on the PCB.
